IN THIS EPISODE…
Gil, Andrew, and Jon discuss the importance of compliance in higher education regarding schools getting the most out of their communication strategies.
“If you’re not thinking about compliance and you’re not taking it seriously, you’re not going to be able to achieve the goals you’re looking for,” says Andrew. “If we follow the rules and the guidance, you’ll be able to communicate how you want to. You’ll be able to have those effective relationships with your students,” he adds.
Jon then discusses the pressure carriers face and why they pushed these new changes. “These rules are coming into play from the telecom providers because they want to protect their customers. They want to ensure that they’re only getting relevant messages at the end of the day. They’re not getting spam messages,” says Jon. “On the higher ed front, there’s a totally different type of relationship, but the idea still applies where you want to protect that relationship.”
Throughout the episode, you’ll also hear Andrew and Jon define some of the essential terms, including A2P (Application-to-Person) and 10DLC (10-digit long code, or “nerdspeak for a regular phone number”). “We’re about to get into three-letter acronym territory here pretty quick,” Andrew says. The trio also provides some historical context of text messaging and how we’ve gotten to where we are today.
“Having a partner that you work with that can navigate all that for you – we talked about the confusing acronyms and their whole vocabulary that we’re having to learn – having that taken care of for you so you can free up time to focus on things that truly matter which are those quality interactions,” says Jon.
