Higher Ed Text Messaging Benchmarks: What 53 Million Messages Reveal About 4-Year College Engagement
Mongoose’s 2026 State of Engagement in Higher Ed benchmark report analyzed 53.4 million messages across Text and Web Chat at 411 four-year colleges and universities, the largest higher ed text messaging dataset of its kind. The student engagement statistics show enrollment yield climbing from 3% to 94% as conversation volume rises, and nearly 1 in 10 Enrollment and Student Success conversations still going unanswered. The data also identifies exactly what drives replies: asking a question roughly doubles reply rates in every team, and Smart Messages outperform standard outreach everywhere, from 2.3x in Enrollment to 4.1x in Student Success. Here’s what the data means for four-year enrollment, student success, and advancement teams.
- 53.4 million messages analyzed across 411 institutions
- Enrollment yield climbs from 3% to 94%
- A question roughly doubles reply rates
- Smart Messages earn up to a 4.1x reply-rate lift
Mongoose’s newly published 2026 State of Engagement in Higher Ed benchmark report for four-year institutions draws on a full academic year of real student and donor messaging: 53.4 million messages, 10.2 million unique contacts, and 411 colleges and universities.
Not surveys, not projections. What people actually did, and the clearest picture yet of how higher ed text messaging performs at scale.
The headline finding isn’t new so much as newly undeniable: the hours students and donors reach out have never matched the hours staff can answer, and the report’s own data makes the case in plain numbers.

The Sector Was Never Staffed for This
The ratios predate any technology. About 286 students per advisor at four-year public institutions, roughly 1,035 applications per admissions officer, and about 25,000 alumni per advancement staffer are national medians, not outliers, according to the sector benchmarks cited in the report.
Messaging is how institutions try to bridge that gap, and even the inboxes show the strain. At the 90th percentile, a single Enrollment shared inbox carries 3,268 contacts. In Advancement, that climbs to 8,359.
The result: 9.3% of Enrollment conversations and 8.8% of Student Success conversations get no staff response at all. Within Student Success, Mental Health conversations fare worse still, at 10.6% unresolved, the most sensitive topic in the dataset and the one where an unanswered message carries the highest cost.
More Conversation Tracks With Better Outcomes
Across 304,913 first-year students and three entry years, the report found a steep, consistent climb: enrollment yield rises from 3% among students with no texts to 94% among those with 21 or more conversations. Campus visits and FAFSA completion follow the same pattern.
This is correlation, not proof of cause; students already leaning toward a school naturally talk more. But the climb holds across every milestone tracked, which is why the report treats conversation volume as a lever worth pulling, not just a vanity metric to watch.
The report’s own Smart Message categories point to why: Enrollment teams increasingly run melt-prevention check-ins over the summer to keep admitted students on track through decision day, the exact stretch when summer melt quietly erodes an incoming class.estion as the ask.
What Actually Drives Replies, By Team
The patterns hold across Enrollment, Student Success, and Advancement, with the size of the effect shifting by team:
- Ask a question. This roughly doubles reply rates in every team, with no exceptions.
- Skip the link. A URL reduces reply rate everywhere in the dataset. There’s no team or message type where a link helps.
- Keep the opener short. Messages of 51 to 100 characters earn about 4 times the reply rate of messages over 250 characters.
- Send as a conversation, not a broadcast. Smart Messages, Mongoose’s format for conversational text messaging built for two-way exchange, outperform standard outreach in every team: a 2.3x lift in Enrollment (6.6% vs. 2.9%), 4.1x in Student Success (16.3% vs. 4.0%, the highest multiplier in the dataset), and 3x in Advancement (7.5% vs. 2.5%).
- Skip the images too. Messages that include a photo underperform plain SMS messages, 2.5% versus 3.0%, so a two-way SMS conversation beats an image-heavy send the same way it beats a link-heavy one.
- Timing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Enrollment peaks at 1 p.m., Student Success at 10 a.m., and Advancement engages best in the early evening and on Sundays, a distinct pattern reflecting a donor and alumni audience rather than a student one.
Only 40% of Student Success institutions currently use Smart Messages, the largest gap in the report between proven lift and actual adoption.
None of this requires new infrastructure. The highest-performing Enrollment sends in the report target prospective students at the exact moment their behavior changes, tracked in whatever CRM or student information system a team already runs: an inquiry logged in Slate, an application started in Salesforce, a hold posted in Banner.
Mongoose sits as the engagement layer above those systems, not a replacement for them.
Where the Hardest Conversations Concentrate
Within Student Success, the highest-friction topics are also the ones that most affect whether a student stays enrolled: Technical issues (15.2% unresolved), Financial (13.2%), Academics (12.9%), and Mental Health (10.6%).
In Enrollment, tech support and financial aid show the lowest resolution rates of any topic, even though they’re among the most routine and repeatable conversations a team handles.
Advancement tells a different story on alumni engagement and donor stewardship. Donor stewardship conversations see 92.9% appreciation, the highest of any topic across any team in the report, evidence that a well-timed thank-you carries outsized weight in the giving relationship.
Web Chat Covers the Hours Text Can’t
Across 215,507 Web Chat conversations, 43% happen outside business hours, and the self-service rate holds at 74% even then. Automated coverage performs just as well after hours as it does during the day, a sharp contrast with text, where institutional outbound activity drops off sharply once staff log off for the night.
What This Means for Your Team
None of this is about mass texting harder. It’s a caseload problem that predates any technology, and a small set of message-writing habits, question-first, no link, named human sender, that improves student communication without adding headcount.
It’s also exactly the gap Mongoose’s AI Agents are built to help close, handling routine after-hours volume so staff can focus on the conversations that genuinely need a person.
Whether you’re evaluating higher education texting platforms for the first time or optimizing one you already run, these patterns hold across the whole student lifecycle, from prospective student to alum, and are worth building into any four-year communication strategy this year.
